century. \n \n \n  \n \n \n eduardo chicharro y agüera was born in madrid (june 18, 1873) in the upper corridor of san pablo and died in the same villa y corte (may 24, 1949). his father eduardo chicharro serrano was a glassmaker, also related to other artisan fields. at the age of 15 he began studying drawing and painting at the royal academy of fine arts of san fernando. \n \n \n  \n \n \n a disciple of joaquín sorolla and teacher of mexican muralist diego rivera, he studied in the workshop of the valencian master, who considered him one of his most gifted disciples. he traveled to italy in 1900 after winning first place and a scholarship from the academy ahead of such important painters as julio romero de torres and fernando álvarez sotomayor. four years later, in 1904, with his work los amores de armida y reinaldo, he won the first medal at the national exhibition of fine arts. immersed in the artistic environment of the madrid of his time, he decided to found and preside in 1910 the so-called association of painters and sculptors, from his own studio in madrid, an association that will create in turn in 1920 the salón de otoño, a contest still in force today. \n \n \n  \n \n \n from 1912 to 1925 he directed the spanish academy in rome, replacing ramón maría del valle inclán. between those years, on may 14, 1922, he joined the royal academy of fine arts of san fernando as an academician, with an outstanding speech entitled science and art of coloring, a message that we believe is represented in the portrait of an old woman that we present here, with its this, and when the second spanish republic was declared, he received the position of general inspector of the schools of arts and crafts, which is still in force today. as a culmination of his career, he was appointed general director of fine arts in 1934. \n \n \n  \n \n \n his active participation in numerous national and foreign exhibitions led him to obtain different medals and mentions; the honorary mention in 1897; second medal in 1899; first medals in 1904 and 1908; medal of honor in 1922; silver medal in liege, 1905; gold medals in munich, 1905 and 1913; medal in zaragoza, 1908; medal in valencia, 1910; medals in barcelona in 1907 and 1911; medal in buenos aires in 1910; medal in panama in 1916; and great gold medal in berlin in 1914. \n \n \n  \n \n \n chamber painter with alfonso \n several spanish and foreign museums keep his paintings. as an anecdotal fact, his work pygmalion, commissioned by the spanish government in 1925 for the current world trade organization (from un fuerte contraste entre la claridad que chicharro imprime al rostro y joya de la anciana, en contraposición a la oscura indumentaria y fondo ocre de la obra. esta propuesta debe de entenderse como un alegato ante la ausencia de color y fortaleza de la línea que sobre la pintura el artista planteó en algunas de sus obras durante la segunda década del siglo xx. \n \n \n  \n \n \n \n \n eduardo chicharro y agüera nació en madrid (18 de junio de 1873) en la corredera alta de san pablo y falleció en la misma villa y corte (24 de mayo de 1949). su padre eduardo chicharro serrano fue vidriero, también relacionado con otros ámbitos artesanos. a la edad de 15 años comenzó a estudiar dibujo y pintura en la real academia de bellas artes de san fernando. \n \n \n  \n \n \n \n \n discípulo de joaquín sorolla y maestro del muralista mexicano diego rivera, estudió en el taller del maestro valenciano, quien le consideró uno de sus discípulos más aventajados. viajó por italia en el año 1900 y gran medalla de oro en berlín en 1914. \n \n \n  \n \n \n \n \n pintor de cámara con alfonso xii, retrató a su vez a alfonso xiii, rey de españa. chicharro fue caballero de la legión de honor, gran oficial de la corona de italia, gran cruz de alfonso x el sabio e hijo adoptivo de ávila. \n \n \n diferentes museos españoles y extranjeros conservan pinturas suyas. como dato anecdótico y dada por desaparecida, vió la luz en 2007 su obra pigmalión, encargada por el gobierno de españa en 1925 con destino a la actual organización mundial del comercio (procedente de gatt), con sede en la ciudad suiza de ginebra. \n \n \n fue maestro del destacado muralista mexicano diego rivera, de su hijo eduardo chicharro briones, que además de pintor, escribió tratados sobre arte y poesía, y del pintor subías (1744-1793). \n \n \n the number and variety of the subjects to be composed and executed established a work team where the new compositional proposals would circulate fluently. the painting that concerns us here shows a thought to undertake one of the main subjects of this series, the bridge over the canal of the manzanares river, a tapestry destined for the so-called prince of asturias room located in the palace of el pardo (madrid, see image 16: © archivo moreno, 03330_c). at present, the dining room of the monastery of san lorenzo el real de el escorial (madrid) holds the great tapestry where this subject is shown together with others of this series in the same textile (see image 17: © archivo moreno, vn-22738). \n \n \n the final sketch was signed by francisco bayeu (madrid, © museo nacional del prado, cat. p000605) whose similarity with the painting to be auctioned is direct (see image 18). the more correct technique in the drawing with impasto in the oils of francisco's definitive canvas, contrasts with the undone mode, and sometimes certain imperfections in the stroke that, in our opinion, point to ramón as the possible author of this thought, who also made the subsequent definitive cardboard. the measurements between the two small paintings differ, 36 x 95 cm in the sketch signed by francisco, as opposed to 37 x 78 cm in the one exhibited here, a difference in the widths forced by the dimensions for his later cardboard and tapestry. without losing the definitive subject, that bridge that existed over the madrid canal, the different variations both in the detailed elements that make up both works and in the colors used (horses, postures, guitars...), we believe that they are signs that we are faced with different proposals for the same en los asuntos a componer y realizar estableció un equipo de trabajo donde las nuevas propuestas compositivas circularían con fluidez. la pintura que aquí nos ocupa muestra un pensamiento para acometer uno de los asuntos principales de esta serie, el puente sobre el canal del río manzanares, un tapiz con destino para el denominado cuarto del príncipe de asturias ubicado en el palacio de el pardo (madrid, véase imagen 16: © archivo moreno, 03330_c). en la actualidad el comedor del monasterio de san lorenzo el real de el escorial (madrid) custodia el gran tapiz donde este asunto se muestra de manera conjunta con otros de esta serie en un mismo textil (véase imagen 17: © archivo moreno, vn-22738). \n \n \n el boceto definitivo lo firmó francisco bayeu (madrid, © museo nacional del prado, cat. p000605) cuya similitud con la pintura a subastar es directa (véase imagen 18). la técnica más correcta en el dibujo con empaste en los óleos del lienzo definitivo de francisco, contrasta con el modo deshecho, y en ocasiones ciertas imperfecciones en el trazo que, en nuestra opinión, apuntan a ramón como posible autor de dicho pensamiento, quien además realizó el consiguiente cartón definitivo. las medidas entre ambas pequeñas pinturas difieren, 36 x 95 cm en el boceto firmado de francisco, frente a 37 x 78 cm del aquí expuesto, una diferencia en los anchos obligada según doctor willey josiah pascal kingsley (9 july 1924, frankfort, ny \u2013 26 january 1912) on 4 december 1860. vogell, settled as a surgeon in rome in 1856, specialized in fight against cancer and founded an oncology hospital in the town three years later. his important professional career led him to hold the following positions in the town: vice president of the central new york institution for deaf mutes (1875-1895), president of roma iron works and the rome brass and copper company, vice president of rome cemetery association y the jervis literary association and mayor of the town of woman poses with half a bust in front of the viewer; she is sitting on a wooden armchair or small sofa with dark green upholstery. her hairstyle shows a headdress with chained pieces, which ties his must have matched with the portrait nelson cook made of doctor j.p. kingsley, georgeanna\u2019s husband, in 1879, an original painting today missing. the canvas we present here has been recently was a dutch draughtsman, painter and engraver who settled in italy. he stood out as a member of a group of artists who became known and called bamboccianti. its members painted, in particular, high quality scenes of country scenes amidst ruins and animals, with unidentified popular figures, in small and medium format, with their centre of activity in rome, which they developed approximately between 1600-1650. \n \n \n the present painting, signed \u2018p. de laer\u2019 is a clear example of this genre. the composition in reference to the white horse should be compared with the same motif that appears in another equine in the engraved print signed by de laer in the museo nacional del prado in madrid (see image). \n \n \n it comes from an old 19th-century collection where it has a handwritten annotation in black ink \u2018nº 6\u2019 on its original stretcher. it also retains a 20th century etching in reference to its framing done in geneva (switzerland): \u2018au cadre
