passou depois à posse de eduardo augusto xavier da cunha, ele próprio comendador da ordem de avis, permanecendo na sua descendência até à integração na actual colecção do dr. antónio da silva-araújo. o desenho do frontispício, ainda que esbatido, merece nota: representa um cavaleiro a cavalo de espada erguida, acompanhado, ao que parece, de duas cabeças decepadas \u2014 composição que a dra. marta alexandre, directora do centro interpretativo da ordem de avis, aquando da apresentação do estudo supra, identificou como sendo a figura de giraldo, «o sem-pavor», conquistador de évora em 1165, protagonista das armas daquela mesma cidade e figura considerada pelos freires como fundacional, ainda que não de facto, da milícia de évora. esta está documentada apenas a partir de 1176, três anos após a morte de giraldo, tendo-se instalado em avis depois de 1211 \u2014, pelo que o desenho vale como evocação retrospectiva do herói fundador da cidade e cujas lendárias acções militares dariam origem à milícia, ao gosto da historiografia seiscentista, e não como um mero retrato de um freire de avis. o desenho testemunha assim que, em seiscentos, o códice era já guardado com respeito e como reserva de memória identitária da ordem, e não como livro de uso. \n \n \n manuscritos medievais desta natureza tornaram-se de extrema raridade no mercado internacional, progressivamente absorvidos por instituições públicas e privadas que os subtraem definitivamente ao comércio. em portugal, espécimes comparáveis \u2014 forais, livros de horas, códices litúrgicos medievais \u2014 praticamente desapareceram dos catálogos desde meados do século passado. nenhum outro ordinário medieval de uma ordem militar portuguesa é conhecido em mãos particulares e nenhum resiste na ibéria com esta antiguidade. \n \n \n \n \n  \n \n \n manuscrito litúrgico sobre pergaminho, aparentemente de ovino, c. 300 mm × 200 mm, 22 fólios com numeração romana (i\u2013xxii) ao centro da margem de cabeceira, numeração aparentemente quinhentista, evocando as que se encontram nos forais manuelinos do primeiro terço do século xvi. subsistem quatro cadernos \u2014 um quaterno (fls. i\u2013viiiv), um terno (fls. ix\u2013xivv) e dois bínios (fls. xv\u2013xviii e xix\u2013xxi, este incompleto) \u2014 verificando-se a falta de fólios entre o segundo e o terceiro cadernos. escrita gótica a tinta castanho-escura, em coluna única regrada; rubricas a vermelho; iniciais filigranadas a vermelho e azul; fólio inicial com cercadura ornamental a vermelho abrindo com o «in resurrectione domini ad missam introitus = intróito da missa da ressurreição». colofão com a data de 1303, lançado em cópia tardia no fl. xxii, aparentemente pela mesma mão da foliação. textos interrompidos nos fls. 19v e 20v\u201321 (ofícios da assunção da virgem e das festas dos apóstolos); ofício da missa dos mártires (fls. 21\u201321v) igualmente incompleto. encadernação em pergaminho, tardia, com o título em letra moderna, talvez fini-seiscentista ou inícios da centúria seguinte: «conventu ad ordinis militis ad avis. era mccciii». no segundo fólio, não numerado, servindo de frontispício, desenho a tinta de mão outrossim fini-seiscentista representando giraldo, «o sem pavor» a cavalo ostentando as dua cabeças mouras, sob o título «ordinarium ad oficium divinum». \n \n \n  \n \n \n proveniência: livraria litúrgica de uma das casas ou comendas da ordem de avis, onde permaneceu até à época moderna, como atestam a encadernação em pergaminho com o título setecentista e o frontispício seiscentista com a figura de giraldo, «o sem-pavor». \u2014 eduardo augusto xavier da cunha (trancoso, 1854 \u2013 coimbra, 1921), engenheiro militar, deputado às cortes e comendador da ordem militar de s. bento de avis; it subsequently passed into the possession of eduardo augusto xavier da cunha, himself a commander of the order of avis, remaining within his descendants until its incorporation into the present-day collection of dr antónio da silva-araújo. \n \n \n the frontispiece drawing, though faded, merits note: it depicts a mounted knight with sword raised, accompanied, it would seem, by two severed heads \u2014 a composition which dr marta alexandre, director of the interpretative centre of the order of avis, identified, when presenting the above-mentioned study, as the figure of giraldo, \"the fearless\", conqueror of évora in 1165, a protagonist of that city's coat of arms and a figure regarded by the friars as the founder \u2014 albeit not in fact \u2014 of the militia of évora. the latter is documented only from 1176, three years after giraldo's death, having settled in avis after 1211 \u2014 so that the drawing stands as a retrospective evocation of the legendary founding hero of the city, whose military exploits were held, after the taste of seventeenth-century historiography, to have given rise to the militia, rather than as a mere portrait of a friar of avis. the drawing thus testifies that, by the seventeenth century, the codex was already being kept with reverence, as a repository of the order's identity and memory, rather than as a working book. \n \n \n medieval manuscripts of this nature have become exceedingly rare on the international market, progressively absorbed by public and private institutions that remove them permanently from trade. in portugal, comparable specimens \u2014 charters, books of hours, medieval liturgical codices \u2014 have all but disappeared from catalogues since the middle of the last century. no other medieval ordinary of a portuguese military order is known to survive in private hands, and none remains in the iberian peninsula of comparable antiquity. \n \n \n  \n \n \n liturgical manuscript on vellum, apparently of sheepskin, c. 300 mm × 200 mm, 22 leaves with roman numeration (i\u2013xxii) at the centre of the head margin, apparently sixteenth-century numeration, recalling that found in the manueline charters of the first third of the sixteenth century. four gatherings survive \u2014 a quaternion (fols. i\u2013viiiv), a ternion (fols. ix\u2013xivv) and two binions (fols. xv\u2013xviii and xix\u2013xxi, the latter incomplete) \u2014 with leaves missing between the second and third gatherings. gothic script in dark brown ink, in a single ruled column; rubrics in red; filigree initials in red and blue; opening leaf with an ornamental red border, beginning with the \"in resurrectione domini ad missam introitus = introit of the mass of the resurrection.\" colophon bearing the date 1303, entered in a later copy on fol. xxii, apparently by the same hand as the foliation. texts interrupted on fols. 19v and 20v\u201321 (offices of the assumption of the virgin and the feasts of the apostles); office of the mass of the martyrs (fols. 21\u201321v) likewise incomplete. vellum binding, of later date, with the title in a modern hand, perhaps late seventeenth or early eighteenth century: \"conventu ad ordinis militis ad avis. era mccciii.\" on the second, unnumbered leaf, serving as frontispiece, an ink drawing, likewise in a late seventeenth-century hand, depicting giraldo, \"the fearless, \" on horseback bearing the two moorish heads, beneath the title \"ordinarium ad oficium divinum.\" \n \n \n  \n \n \n provenance: the liturgical library of one of the houses or commanderies of the order of avis, where it remained until the modern era, as attested by the vellum binding with its eighteenth-century title and the seventeenth-century frontispiece bearing the figure of giraldo, \"the fearless.\" \u2014 eduardo augusto xavier da cunha (trancoso, 1854 \u2013 coimbra, 1921), military engineer, deputy to the cortes, and commander of the military order of st benedict of avis;
