poland. he was also involved in public activity, and was one of the prominent rabbis from poland who participated in the st. petersburg conference.\nborn in sheransk in mazovia (congress poland, now poland), to binyamin and deborah rakhil (granddaughter of rabbi zelig of sheransk, one of the students of the chozeh from lublin), in his youth he was acclaimed as an ilui, and was a student of the town's rabbi, rabbi yisrael yehoshua of kutna. he married a woman from plutsk, where he lived after his marriage. he belonged to the gur chasidus.\nalready from a young age he taught students in plutsk (among them was nahum sokolov, who dedicated an article to his memory in the tzifara newspaper after his death). during this period he made a living from a grocery store run by his wife. after becoming impoverished, he turned to the profession of rabbinate and was appointed rabbi of rachonez in 1878. in 1893, he moved to serve as rabbinate in proshnitz, and then in 1896 in shadlitz, after great askan\" he also mastered the russian language - which was rare among rabbis in poland during his time. his scholarship was also appreciated by the famous rogatshover gaon, rabbi yosef rosin. \nin halachic rulings, he tended to be as lenient as possible, and when he was a rabbi in proshnitz, he even got into a charged halachic polemic with the avnei nezer after he permitted machine matzos against the opinion of the chidushei harim of gur and rabbi avraham landa of tashchenov. however following the objection of the sfas emes, the rabbi reversed himself and canceled the baking of machine the beit habechirah of the meiri on bava metzia, along with his own scholarly notes. in addition, he compiled a commentary of the raavad on bava metzia. other published writings of his include limmudei nissan on the torah, as well as on tractate beitzah. rabbi alpert was also known as an extraordinary darshan\u2014a preacher who was able to excite his audience. only a short while before his ליבל קובנר).  \n הוא כיהן כאחד מראשי ישיבתו של הרב ריינס בשווינציאן, שקמו לה מתנגדים ונסגרה לבסוף.  \n בשנת ה'תרמ\"ד עזב הרב ריינס את שווינציאן ובמקומו התמנה רבי מאיר רבינזון, שעזב לשם כך את רבנות העיירה קרוק (קראק). רי\"י פרייל התמנה שם במקומו, ושירת בכהונת רבנות זו עד פטירתו כעבור אחת עשרה שנים והוא בן פחות מארבעים שנה.  \n הוא נפטר בקובנה ממחלת כליות ממנה סבל שנים רבות, ונקבר בה בהלוויה schwartz: \"he was born on 12 tevet 5619 in birzai\" which is equivalent to 19 december 1858. \n\nwhile yet a youth he stood out for his intellectual abilities and was referred to as the ilui (genius) of birzai. in those days rabbi asher nissan, one of the great scholars of that generation, whose wife was a relative of the preils', was rabbi of birzai. the rabbi composed many novellae [new insights into the talmud] but was unable to record them, which the preil lad did for him. rabbi asher nissan was continually amazed by the young lad's quick grasp of difficult and complex issues. his book gan na'ul was written this way, in clear and appropriate language, by the young preil.\n\nat that time he, together with some other boys his age, edited a hebrew weekly. they received 5 kopeks per copy and they used the profits to buy cigarettes which they smoked in secret. the famous writer, yosef leib zusnitz who lived in birzai, got hold of a copy which so impressed him that he placed a standing order for 50 copies which he distributed. when yehoshua yosef's father heard that zusnitz, who was known as a freethinker, was buying the weekly, he ordered his son to stop issuing it.\n\nat the age of eleven yehoshua yosef studied in wabalnik and vitebsk under the supervision of rabbi zalman landau. at the age of fourteen he returned to birzai and became engaged, but the engagement was broken, possibly because the bride had the same middle name as his mother. when he was sixteen he married a girl named devorah bracha in sventsyany (svencionys, in the vilna district) where rabbi isaac jacob reines, the first of the religious zionists and first head of the mizrachi movement, was rabbi at the time. rabbi preil became a close friend and confidant of rabbi reines and they remained friends until his last day.\n\nin 1884 rabbi preil was appointed rabbi of krakes, a post which he held until his untimely death twelve years later. rabbi preil wrote his philosophical book eglei-tal in 1886, a book which reveals not only the depth of his knowledge of the jewish sources but also a broad knowledge of the non-jewish world. when his book evoked a strong reaction from judah leib rosenthal, one of the leaders of the haskalah [enlightenment] movement, in the journal \"hamelitz\", rabbi preil responded with a number of articles in the same journal. the orthodox eagerly looked forward to his articles and even those who did not agree with him honored him because he did not distort the truth. he wrote what he felt was true and while he wrote against the \"enlightened\" authors he also criticized his rabbinical colleagues when he thought them intellectually dishonest.\n\nrabbi preil was not a well man and there were times that he was bedridden for days and weeks, which did not מצא מקבילות או ביאורים בתורת הנסתר וכן להיפך. נסמך להוראה על ידי ר' שלום מרדכי הכהן שבדרון [מהרש\"ם מברז'אן], בגיל 19 נשא לאישה את בת דודו \u2013 אדמו\"ר רבי מאיר משאץ [אח של אביו] והרבנית דינה והתגורר בשאץ. \n \n \n הסתגר בביתו ושקד יומם ולילה על לימוד התורה, התפלל באריכות ודביקות, ישן כ \u2013 4 שעות ביממה ואכל רק פת במלח. כיהן כאב״ד [אב בית דין] בעיר שאץ, השיב לשאלות הלכתיות שהופנו אליו בכתבי עת ומיעט להשתתף בשמחות אליהם הוזמן אפילו של נכדיו על מנת לא לבטל לימוד תורה. הוכיח ופסק כי כל הקמח המיוצר מחיטים שצמחו באנגליה אינו כשר להכנת מצות היות ומזג האוויר באנגליה לח כל השנה ולכן קיים the letter continues and cries that in current times there has been a change, and the new groups make their business a priority, and are flaunting their achievements. the letter continues with extremely sharp criticism of these people. and concludes by begging the jews of the diaspora not to send their contributions to these groups. it is dated between rosh hashana and yom kippur of 1889. reb refael meir fenjal, (1804-1893) was appointed rishon letzion in 1880. he was known as a miracle worker. when he visited tunisia in 1863, the country was experiencing a severe drought, and they asked him to pray for rain. before he completed his prayer, the sky suddenly covered with clouds and much rain fell. he authored the sefer lev marpeh. rabbi yaakov shaul elyashar (1817-1906) was a prominent jerusalem rabbi, a disciple of his stepfather, kabbalist rabbi binyamin mordechai navon rav\u201dd jerusalem, who gave rabbi elyashar the \u201cyisa brachah\u201d moniker when he was still young. in 1853, he began serving as dayan in jerusalem, and in 1869 av\u201dd. in 1863, he was appointed rishon lezion, a position he filled until his death at the age of 89.\nמכתב חריף נחתם ע\"י שני (nee bauman). he was the first of 7 children born to yisroel moshe and ruchel and was one of many rabbis in his family(including 2 of his brothers as well as his father and grandfather). meyer recalled the destruction of his town during wwi in a letter he wrote to one of his fellow authors:\n\n\"i was born in the city of zagorov\u2026 before the first war broke out. in the year 1914 i lived in kalisz. i remember on tisha b'av the germans entered kalisz and on the third day they attacked and several people from [the jewish people] were killed, also the teacher from davshitz (i forgot his name) fell in the street.\"\n\n\n''\"during the first year of world war i, the invading german army destroyed 95% of kalisz in a deliberate act committed on a defenseless city, and killed 33 jews.\"''\nrabbi meyer learned in yeshiva and was ordained as a rabbi and also received a doctorate in literature. he moved east, as did most of his siblings, to seidlce, poland, after he married his wife chava (nee jablon from kock, poland). there, meyer and chava had 7 children in seidlce before the outbreak of wwii. just before the war, rabbi meyer went to canada using his profession as a journalist to obtain a visa. soon after the war broke out, in 1939, chava rushed her 7 children out of poland on the ship named \"batory\" that made port in halifax, nova scotia, canada. meyer's brother, rabbi shloyme usher, fled to shanghai. aside from his brother, all of meyer's siblings were murdered in the holocaust.\n\nafter escaping the war, the schwartzmans settled in winnipeg, canada, where reb meyer joined the agudat yisrael organization and became the chief rabbi of winnipeg, as well as the pulpit rabbi of the shul beyt yehudah (appointed in 1940). he was involved in disputes between two kashrut organizations. rabbi meyer wrote many books, or sefarim, on chasidic history, literature, and culture. he also wrote a collection of sefarim on the 5 books of the torah titled \"meir eyney yesharim\" which are perhaps his most famous works. he is well known amongst gerrer chassidim as he was a gerrer chassid himself. rav meyer also had historic correspondences with other
