the distinguished collection of leo & doris hodroff. lot essay: throughout his career, thomas hart benton challenged both the political and artistic establishment, emerging as a passionate advocate for rural midwestern america. as one of the leading figures of american regionalism, he created murals that were accessible to broad audiences while offering unflinching portrayals of american life; a reflection of his own outspoken character. although benton is best known for monumental works such as \"america today\" and \"arts of life in america, \" his artistic legacy also includes thousands of drawings, paintings, sculptures, lithographs, and watercolor landscapes that reveal the breadth of his artistic practice. born on april 15, 1889, in neosho, missouri, benton left high school at the age of seventeen to work as a cartoonist for the joplin american newspaper. in 1907, his father agreed to support his artistic ambitions, allowing him to enroll at the art institute of chicago. a year later, benton traveled to paris to study at the academie julian, where he met california artist stanton macdonald-wright. under macdonald-wright's influence, he experimented with synchromism, an abstract movement that emphasized color and form. after returning to the united states in 1911, benton settled in new york city, where his work reflected the modernist influences he had absorbed in europe. it was during this formative period that he completed \"central park\" which demonstrates his early interest in abstraction before his embrace of regionalism. following his service in world war i, benton returned to new york and married fellow artist rita piacenza. throughout the early 1920s, he continued to produce modernist and abstract works until a pivotal trip to missouri in 1924 to visit his ailing father. reconnecting with the people and landscapes of his home state inspired benton to reject modernism in favor of a distinctly american style rooted in regionalism. this shift established the visual language for which he became best known, celebrating the character and labor of rural america through dynamic murals and expressive landscapes. his growing reputation culminated on december 24, 1934, when he became the first artist to have a work, a self-portrait, featured on the cover of time magazine. by then, benton was widely recognized, alongside grant wood and john steuart curry, as one of the three leading american regionalist painters. during this same period, he also taught at the art students league of new york, where one of his students was the future abstract expressionist jackson pollock. in 1935 benton left new york and permanently settled in kansas city, missouri, where he died in 1975 just after putting the finishing touches on a mural for the country music hall of fame in nashville, tennessee. \n \n sight; the distinguished collection of leo & doris hodroff. lot essay: hans hofmann was one of the most influential figures in postwar american art, celebrated for his vibrant, color-filled canvases and recognized as one of the twentieth century's most progressive and impactful art educators. born on march 21, 1880, in weissenberg, germany, hofmann studied art in munich, where he met his wife, maria wolfegg. with financial support from philipp freudenberg, owner of berlin's prestigious kaufhaus gerson department store, the couple relocated to paris. there, hofmann immersed himself in the city's avant-garde circles, working alongside henri matisse and forming friendships with pablo picasso, georges braque, and robert and sonia delaunay. during his years in paris, he exhibited work deeply informed by cubism and the innovations of paul cezanne until the outbreak of world war i forced his return to germany. unable to serve in the military because of a respiratory condition, hofmann founded an art school in munich in 1915, quickly earning a reputation as a visionary teacher. in 1933, he immigrated to the united states, where he became a central figure in new york's emerging avant-garde community. the following year, he reopened his art school, teaching in new york during the academic year and provincetown, massachusetts, each summer. his dynamic teaching methods and emphasis on modern artistic principles profoundly influenced a generation of artists and played a pivotal role in the development of abstract expressionism. although already sixty-four when he held his first solo exhibition at art of this century in new york in 1944, hofmann continued balancing teaching with painting until closing his school in 1956. free to devote himself entirely to his own work during the height of abstract expressionism, he developed the artistic philosophy he termed \"push and pull, \" describing the dynamic relationships between color, form, and space. drawing on matisse's expressive use of color and cubism's spatial innovations, hofmann created a remarkable body of work that evolved from the expressive landscapes of the 1930s to the iconic \"slab\" paintings of the late 1950s and the bold abstractions of his final years. \n \n unframed; the distinguished collection of leo & doris hodroff. lot essay: wilson henry irvine is best remembered as one of america's foremost impressionist landscape painters. celebrated for his luminous, lyrical depictions of the natural world, irvine masterfully captured the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere that define the impressionist movement. born in byron, illinois, irvine studied at the school of the art institute of chicago while working as a newspaper illustrator and commercial artist with the chicago portrait company. a visit to the renowned artist colony at old lyme, connecticut, in 1914 proved transformative, and he relocated there with his family in 1918. surrounded by a vibrant community of painters, irvine further developed his distinctive impressionist vision, continually exploring innovative approaches to color and light. among his most fascinating experiments was prismatic painting, in which he placed prisms over his glasses to refract light into brilliant spectral colors, translating these shimmering visual effects directly onto canvas. although best known for his radiant landscapes, irvine also painted intimate portraits of family members and elegant still lifes, as beautifully demonstrated in \"tea time.\" his dedication to advancing american impressionism earned him election as a member of the national academy of design in 1926. irvine died at his home in hamburg, connecticut, on august 25, 1936. today, his paintings remain in the permanent collections of the national portrait gallery, the art institute of chicago, and the florence griswold museum, a lasting testament to his enduring contribution to american impressionism. \n \n unframed; flanders contemporary art, minneapolis, mn, december 15, 1987; the distinguished collection of leo & doris hodroff. lot essay: born in new york city, reynolds beal initially set aside his artistic ambitions to study naval architecture at cornell university. three years after graduating in 1887, he returned to his true passion, enrolling briefly at the art students league before continuing his studies under william merritt chase at the shinnecock school on long island. he later traveled extensively throughout europe, sketching in paris, spain, and north africa, before returning to new york to establish his own studio. thanks to the success of their father's business, beal and his younger brother, gifford beal, also a highly respected painter, were able to devote themselves entirely to art while traveling widely throughout their lives. together they explored the waterways of nicaragua and costa rica, the caribbean, the american north and west, the far east, and europe. during many of his journeys between 1900 and 1920, reynolds beal was accompanied by fellow american impressionists including childe hassam, ernest lawson, hermann dudley murphy, and henry ward ranger. an avid sailor, beal found endless inspiration along the new england coastline, which became his favorite subject. \"south roundabout, new york\" beautifully reflects both his background in naval architecture and his lifelong fascination with maritime scenes. rather than blending his paint into smooth passages, beal applied vibrant, visible strokes of pure color side by side to evoke the shimmering reflections of light on the water, the texture of the verdant hillsides, and the movement of clouds across the pale blue sky. these dense, rhythmic, mosaic-like brushstrokes are hallmarks of the american impressionist style. throughout his career, beal was an active member of the american art community. he helped found both the society of independent artists and the new society of artists, a group of approximately fifty leading painters that included childe hassam, maurice prendergast, and john sloan. in 1909, he was elected an associate member of the national academy of design, and a decade later he was among a select group of american artists invited to exhibit at the luxembourg museum in paris. today, his work is represented in numerous museum collections, including the metropolitan museum of art. \n \n unframed;
